Posture – The Picture of Health

We all brush and floss our teeth daily to maintain the our teeth so why not do something every day to take care of your spine?

Look at the picture there are three postures shown here. Your chiropractor evaluates your posture as a measure to determine the health of your spine. You can observe your own posture and that of your loved ones at home.

Lets analyze them from the bottom up. On the left we see that the pelvis is tipped backward flattening the back. On the right the pelvis is tipped forward creating a deeper curve in the back and rounding the shoulders. Note how these abnormal postures bring the head forward putting strain on the neck.

The effects of habitual poor posture are devastating!

Our spine works best when it is in a neutral relaxed and upright posture. Poor posture puts our spine under continual stress which can quickly cause wear and tear on our bones and joints causing back pain and disc problems. Your chiropractor encourages good posture for the family.

Practice good posture in front of a mirror at least once per day. See how it looks and feels to stand tall and relax your head and shoulders back. It is not only a posture of confidence it is a posture that will yield greater function from your spine for many more years.

One of the most vital nutrients we can give our spine is motion so make an effort to put a little motion in your spine every day! When you wake up and throughout the day take some time to move and stretch your spine. Bend forward back and to the sides. These simple motions can help keep our discs hydrated and keep our ligaments and muscles conditioned. Many of the jobs we do involve sitting at computers or desks all day with our arms shoulders and head hunched over. Over time this posture will manifest as neck pain headaches and spinal degeneration if we dont take a little time throughout the day to take care of our spines.

While there is a lot that we can do to maintain our spine on a daily basis we can still get stuck in misalignment causing stress and strain on our nerves and decreasing our function mechanically and physiologically. In addition to keeping good posture and giving our spines as much motion as we can a key part of keeping our spines healthy is regular chiropractic maintenance!

Do You Feel Like Your Head Is In A Vice?

I am concerned about how you May be handling the situation. Like so many people medication prescription and over-the-counter are chosen without recognizing some of the major consequences. A recent study in Headache concluded “Predictably reliable treatment for most headache types is often lacking”. What May be more surprising is that medications May actually worsen headaches over the long term turning an acute situation into a chronic one. Researchers call this phenomenon medication-overuse headache (MOH). They also estimate that 50% of all chronic headaches are MOH. Curr Pain Headache Rep.

Migraine symptoms vary but commonly begin with a dull ache that becomes a constant throbbing and pulsating pain felt at the temples beneath one eye and the front or back of one side of the head. Sometimes there is nausea vomiting and sensitivity to light and noise.

When spinal bones (vertebrae) become misaligned it is the start of a condition known as vertebral subluxation. A couple of studies link vertebral subluxation to headaches. In one study 127 volunteers with regular migraines were divided into two groups those who got chiropractic evaluations and those that did not. After two months there was a significant statistical difference in frequency duration disability and medication use in the 8 chiropractic cases compared to the control group. (JMPT)

Another 218 subjects were treated with either amitriptyline a common migraine medication chiropractic or both. The chiropractic only group had 40% fewer migraines. Noted in the conclusion of that study was that “there was no advantage to combining amitriptyline” with chiropractic for migraine headache and that there were no side effects with chiropractic treatment unlike with medication. Good practices for migraine sufferers

Incorporate a relaxation daily routine

Reduce your stress: Incorporate a daily relaxation routine like massage T’ai Chi yoga biofeedback meditation prayer and breathing exercises.

Exercise: Aerobic exercise makes you feel better and helps block pain. They also can keep migraines away.

Eat healthy: Get plenty of fresh nutritious foods add or increase vitamin B consumption in your diet. Also avoid dietary triggers like alcohol caffeine MSG Aspartame and chocolate.

Rest: Get plenty of sleep. A good nights sleep is essential for everyone.

Jamie Olivers Food Revolution Comes to Kennesaw GA

Jamie Oliver has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the growing obesity epidemic that – if left unchecked – threatens not only our children but every subsequent generation. Hes had great success as a chef entrepreneur and social activist but it is his passion for great food and cooking from scratch that has inspired people globally and enabled him to highlight the importance of cooking skills throughout the world.

Why do we need a food revolution?

The problem stems from the loss of cooking skills at home and the availability of processed foods at every turn from the school cafeteria to church function halls factories and offices. This Food Revolution is about saving lives by inspiring everyone: moms dads kids teens and cafeteria workers to get back to basics and start cooking good food from scratch.

What can you do?

The See It Make It Eat It program is inspired by an event on May 19 called Food Revolution Day.  The event is an initiative launched by the Jamie Oliver Foundation to inspire educate and empower people everywhere to stand up for real food. Thousands of people worldwide will participate in events to raise awareness on preventing diet-related diseases and to arm people with the knowledge and tools to make healthier food choices.

Register for a class. Registration is free sponsored by the Fit City Kennesaw initiative but is limited to fifty participants. Saturday May 19 at the Edge Kitchen 2750 Jiles Road in Kennesaw Commons classes will be conducted from 10 am – 2 pm.

Poor spinal alignment can also be the cause of heartburn constipation and even menstrual cramps. Poor spinal alignment also plays a role in thoughts of depression fatigue and general feelings of malaise. These conditions can take a toll on your health your posture the quality of your interactions with people your feelings of accomplishment and your ability to work. A misaligned or subluxated spine can cause a variety of health problems and requires professional chiropractic adjustment. I am trained in a number of chiropractic techniques that help align the spine and bring your body into balance; each technique offers benefits including reduced pain increased mobility a sense of vitality and better health overall.

What is a Spinal Adjustment?

Spinal adjustment is the overall process of spinal alignment and involves ‘retraining’ the spine and surrounding muscles to adapt to a healthier state of functionality. Spinal adjustment is often used to increase mobility to bring the entire spinal column into balance. Bringing your spinal column into balance reduces stress on the central nervous system since the spinal column is the primary conduit for its interaction with the rest of the body. The process itself depends on the technique that is appropriate for your spine at the time of examination.

Extremity Manipulation

An extremity is any part of your body that is not your spine examples are shoulders wrists hips and knees. I use extremity manipulation to mobilize muscles and joints that May be causing musculoskeletal problems such as difficulty walking or as a result of injury like typing or sports. The goal of extremity manipulation and extremity adjusting is to restore mobility and function to the area that is not moving properly to reduce pain increase mobility or flexibility or reduce the stressful effects they can have on the spine.

Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique

Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique involves analyzing the length of the legs and determining whether a pelvic deficiency is present. The Activator Methods technique aims to restore the proper function of the nervous system by correcting vertebral and pelvic misalignments using an Activator mallet to deliver the adjustment. This type of technique works wonderfully for people who have an aversion to the sounds of popping that often accompany Diversified and Full Spine Technique adjusting. It is also considered high velocity low amplitude adjusting by some researchers even though it is done by instrument. The effect is little different from a patient perspective (

Thompson Chiropractic Technique

The Thompson Technique is another method of adjustment that involves analyzing the length of the legs. This technique uses a ‘drop table’ for adjustment where a gentle thrust is applied to the joints which in turn sets the drop piece into motion and targets the specific joint. This is my preferred method because the evaluation of the subluxation has a high level of consistency and accuracy. Further the delivery of the adjustment is gentle and precise.

Diversified Technique3D Spine

Some consider this to be the best pieces of several techniques put together while others call this a technique unto itself. Either way it I use it as a part of the treatment protocol when indicated. It is especially useful in flexible patients and athletes. The application of any of the diversified moves are delivered after a complete evaluation of your needs and presentation at that time.

Gonstead Chiropractic Technique

This method was developed by Dr. Clarence S. Gonstead in 192 and has since been used to treat a variety of conditions. Gonstead chiropractic techniques address all areas of subluxation – the areas where the spine is out of alignment and is causing a vertebral subluxation complex. The Gonstead technique recognizes the misalignments primarily through X-Ray and motion palpation. It is the foundation for the Life Full Spine Technique.

Cox Flexion/Distraction Chiropractic Techniques

If you are suffering from back leg neck or arm pain and do not want to pursue surgery the Cox Flexion/Distraction technique offers one option. It is considered a safe alternative to back surgery and helps restore the range of motion in joints after bringing the spine into alignment. Treatment is performed on a special table that flexes and bends various joints. It is commonly used to restore herniated discs reduce headaches and improve posture.

A Gift From the Freemasons of Georgia

Georgia Masons provide the GACHIP program FREE of charge as a public service and as our gift to the citizens of our state.

GACHIP-the GeorgiA CHild Identification Program is one of the most comprehensive Child Recovery Identification and Abduction Awareness programs ever to be offered to parents in the state of Georgia.

At a GACHIP event Freemasons set up the equipment necessary to generate completed identification kits.

Each person progresses through several stations taking about 10 to 15 minutes for the entire process. The recorded information is presented to the childs parent or guardian to take home for safekeeping.

There is no age limit!

April 21-2 201 during the Big Shanty Festival the booth will be set up in the Eaton Chiropractic Building.
